More about Millie

I have been travelling to the African continent since 1993, when I took a 3 month sabbatical in Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi on my way back to the UK from a year working in Hong Kong after university. I completely fell in love with Africa and in 2005, after too many years of working in finance in London, I eventually took the plunge and packed in London life and followed my heart back to Africa. The opportunity had arisen to manage a safari camp for a season in Zambia, in the heart of the South Luangwa Valley, for a well known pioneer of walking safaris.

What an exciting and varied experience it was, living right amongst the wildlife where elephants and hippos were all around (and in!) camp, as well as the occasional leopard prowling past at night upsetting the resident baboons.  Days were long and busy but what a joy it was to watch the sun rise and set over the Luangwa River every day and to be surrounded by the smells and sounds of the bush.

From here I went on to help manage two very special, and remote, island beach camps – first, in the north of Lake Malawi and second, off the northern Kenya coast.  Here the pace of life for guests was considerably slower than at a safari camp, but for those of us working there it still came with all of the same challenges being in such a remote location and with limited supplies and infrastructure…..but, again, what an absolute privilege to be able to spend extended time on both of these stunning islands in the name of work.

The local logistical knowledge I gained on the ground was invaluable as was the opportunity to visit many camps in Zambia, Malawi, Kenya whilst giving me a good instinct of how to look at camps and assess the way in which they are organised and managed.

Since returning to the UK from Africa in 2006 I have spent my time working for 3 top UK tour operators.  It has been an integral part of my job, and my passion, to get to Africa 2 or 3 times a year on intense familiarisation trips.  This is absolutely crucial because first hand experience really is vital in understanding which camps have the great guides, location and management.  Each African country has its own individual attractions, terrain, activities, culture and transport, and understanding the nuances involved is key to knowing what will suit each individual client.

I get immense pleasure out of creating totally bespoke African safaris, beach holidays and adventures for a range of international clients and hopefully I can help create extraordinary and memorable trips for you too.
