BOTSWANA

Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa and is one of the most sparsely populated with approximately two million inhabitants, mostly in the cities. It certainly offers some of the most luxurious camps and lodges in sub-Saharan Africa and, because it has a policy of keeping visitor numbers down, the prices can be higher than some of its neighbours but you do have a very exclusive feel to your safari.

Whilst 70% of the country is made up of the Kalahari Desert it is also home to some incredible wildlife in the more northern part of the country; that is, in the northern Linyanti region and in the Okavango Delta, which is one of the world's largest inland deltas and a must on any trip to Botswana.

While most river deltas usually lead to an ocean, the Okavango River empties onto open land, flooding the savanna and creating a unique and ever-changing inland delta. The best months to visit are between May and October as it’s dry but the Delta fills up (from the neighbouring Angolan mountains) attracting all of the wildlife, but you can go all year round and still have a rewarding safari. Some camps offer water activities (boating, dug out canoes/mokoros) and land activities (game drives, walks) and bird watching is great at either; and some camps specialise on one or the other, water or land. The Delta is home to a huge variety of wildlife and also includes some endangered species such as wild dog, black and white rhino, cheetah and lion.

The south of the country is largely desert and thus it offers a striking contrast to the lush waterways of the north. You can visit the San Bushmen of the Central Kalahari and experience the vast emptiness of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, the remains of one of the world’s largest super lakes and a wonderful place to camp out under the stars, go horse riding, quad biking and get out on foot. It isn’t always dry – when the rains arrive, any time between November and April, the area bursts into life and you can see the second largest zebra and wildebeest migration in the world.

It's also very easy to tag on a few nights in Zambia or Zimbabwe to see Victoria Falls and relax after your travels and before your safari, or at the end before you fly home. There is a very efficient light aircraft infrastructure in Botswana that connects with both countries easily.
