SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa is the largest country in southern Africa and that comes with it a myriad of different sights, tastes and experiences for all the family. It has always been a popular first-time safari option, particularly for families, as it is malaria-free in and around Cape Town and in some of the wildlife areas in the Eastern Cape and the Madikwe Game Reserve. But it is also home to some of the most sophisticated safari lodges that even the most well-travelled, intrepid and purist of safari goers can’t fail to be impressed by. If it’s under canvas and bucket showers that you want then it is a bit limited, but if it’s spacious rooms/villas, plunge pools, air conditioning and gourmet food then there is a huge selection to choose from in South Africa. The Kruger is well known for its wildlife but it is really the more private concessions adjacent to it and further afield that offer great and varied wildlife in a more exclusive and private setting.

Elsewhere in the country, a wide range of accommodation is on offer and even the B&B’s and guest houses are wonderfully charming with delicious breakfasts and friendly staff. This makes it a great destination for those who like to be a bit more independent and self-drive to see more of the country whether it’s the winelands, the Garden Route, the battlefields or the wonderful beaches.

Fantastically creative food, delicious wine and, increasingly, African art, play a huge part of a trip to South Africa and this is particularly evident when visiting Cape Town and the surrounding winelands; although it is evident in a lot of the lodges and hotels all over the country. Keeping up with the latest hot spots for eating out in Cape Town and the winelands is a full-time job in itself. And finding the most engaging guides to show you around these areas is key, whether you are visiting art galleries/collections, learning to surf, climbing Table Mountain, paddle boarding with penguins or picnic-ing down at the Cape Peninsula Point where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. Given its unpredictable weather you need the flexibility of a professional guide to juggle things around in order to maximise your time on the ground.
