TANZANIA

Tanzania, like Kenya, has the benefit of offering some incredibly rewarding and diverse safari options in addition to some beautiful beach lodges on the spice islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia; or you could even helicopter in to your very own private island with all the bells and whistles you could ever want. Just let us know how you want to spend your time on the coast and we can select the best hotel for you, whether it’s just reading a book by the pool and having a massage or diving, snorkelling or kite surfing.

The Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti in the north are perhaps the most well known areas and they certainly deliver the most vast and dramatic scenery, the endless Serengeti plains, the Masai culture and incredible wildlife. The wildebeest migration moves around the plains of the Serengeti between September/October and June/July and while the much televised and dramatic river crossings are often in Kenya, the northern part of the Serengeti also sees a lot of them in certain months too. There is a great range of seasonal camps that follow the action so there’s always a good chance of experiencing it if that’s your goal but there are also more permanent lodges available too if you like a bit more luxury and don’t long for an authentic bucket shower! A visit to the Serengeti outside of the wildebeest migration will still provide a wonderful safari as there are resident big cats and plains game all over the ecosystem.

For those in search of a more remote, and perhaps more adventurous, safari the south and west of the country has some amazing options with the likes of the Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha and Katavi National Parks.  In the Selous you can get out on foot to do a walking safari, or try some game viewing by boat on the river or cover more ground by 4x4 before sleeping out in the bush underneath a mosquito net. If you still want more excitement, then you can head even further west to the Mahale Mountains on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Here you can relax on the lake shores between chimpanzee trekking in the mountains behind camp, go kayaking or dive off the boat for a swim in the lake.
